About Us
Positioning Ballet was set up in 2017 and today is a global network providing a range of initiatives for Artistic Directors of ballet and dance companies from around the world to come together to share issues, challenges, successes and concerns with their peers as well as external experts from the worlds of business, sport and the wider arts and cultural sectors.
Led by Co-Directors, Ted Brandsen and Assis Carreiro with Susannah Burke, the Positioning Ballet Conferences are a follow on from DanceEast’s pioneering Rural Retreats, first launched in the UK in 2003. The latter were the first ever gatherings that brought together Artistic Directors for much needed reflective time for sharing, learning, challenge and exchange.
Twenty years on from the first gathering, and post lockdown, Black Lives Matter and numerous global challenges, it was timely to reflect on the future direction of Positioning Ballet.
It became clear from discussions with ballet and dance leaders around the globe that a more formal international organisation to support existing and future Artistic Directors around the globe was much needed. Thus, Positioning Ballet Foundation was formally set up and today runs a series of annual in-person conferences and forums, digital meetings, mentoring and shadowing initiatives.
